Lona Wong Service Award

Lona Wong, or “Miss Lona” as everyone at Holy Spirit knew her, was Bayou City Blessings’ in a Backpack’s first volunteer. Upon hearing the news of this newly born ministry in 2012, and without knowing the “hows” of it (really none of us did!), Miss Lona’s first response was “Count me in!”. Almost every day, Miss Lona would bring recycled plastic bags from her evening job at Wax-Mart. She brought them in by the arm full. Thousands of Bayou City Blessings bags have the fingerprints of Miss Lona on them.

Miss Lona lived her life with joy and love which was reflected in her service to others including Bayou City Blessings. In the spring of 2017, we lost Miss Lona but her spirit of service lives on in each and every one of the staff and students of Holy Spirit Episcopal School and the volunteers of Bayou City Blessings. If you’ve ever come to Holy Spirit to volunteer, chances are you have used our beloved “Lona Lane” or “Wong Way” driveways to arrive.

It is in her spirit of joy that we are pleased to award our annual Lona Wong Service Award. Each year, this award will be presented to a volunteer or a volunteer service group who reflects the joy, life and love that Miss Lona always brought with her.
